Dover, NH – The
Canadian Payments Association (CPA) has developed new
standards for checks drawn from Canadian bank accounts,
which will take effect in June of 2007. For this
reason, Relyco has added an entire new line of CPA
Compliant Checks to meet the needs of their Canadian
customers.
The new items in
Relyco’s Canadian Stock Check line incorporate all of
the new Canadian check standards laid out by the CPA,
while maintaining the same level of document security as
their existing Basichek® and Magnachek™
laser cut sheet lines, as well as their UltraSeal™
line of pressure seal one-piece mailers. For customers
having specific needs for their check printing
applications, Relyco also offers CPA Compliant Checks in
custom designs.
The CPA design
changes primarily affect only the back side of the
check, so the front of Relyco’s Canadian Laser Checks
will be nearly identical to those of their traditional
American Basichek®, Magnachek™, and
UltraSeal™ lines. The lone exception is the
addition of the Maple Leaf Symbol in place of the usual
Padlock Icon in the lower right corner of the check,
which denotes that the check is CPA compliant (Canadian)
as opposed to ANSI compliant (American).
The back of the Canadian Check Line includes several
changes, including the addition of a Teller Stamp area,
the Maple Leaf Symbol in place of the Padlock Icon, and
the word “Back” printed in both English and French. The
most noticeable difference on the new Canadian Check
Stock, however, is that all of the information is
printed “portrait”, meaning that one can easily read it
without turning the check sideways. On American checks,
the Endorsement area and other printed information are
positioned in a “landscape” format.
The changes to both the ANSI (American) and CPA
(Canadian) check writing standards are the result of a
movement toward electronic transfer of check images and
funds in the banking industry. The idea of electronic
banking is not a new one, but it gained significant
traction when all air travel was suspended following the
events of September 11th. The grounding of
airplanes exposed a major weakness in the financial
system, as aircraft carrying paper checks across the
country were unable to reach their destinations,
temporarily crippling the banking industry.
