If you are
printing documents that contain personal or otherwise sensitive information
(i.e. legal documents, drug prescriptions, etc.) or if the base stock for your
forms is especially vulnerable to theft (i.e. secure transcripts or prescription
paper), you should know about Laser Printers with Locks.
Most
MICR Laser Printers –
typically
used for printing checks – are equipped with locking
drawers to prevent the
blank check stock from being
stolen from the paper tray. However, for non-check applications, more expensive
MICR toner is not
necessary, and therefore, neither is a MICR Laser Printer.
Unfortunately, few if any standard laser printers with locks are available on
the market. This means that a hospital or doctor’s office that may be printing
patient’s prescriptions on
secure prescription paper
will very likely have to use a non-secure laser printer as opposed to a laser
printer with locks. Needless to say, leaving blank prescription paper in the
print drawer invites theft, as the blank stock can then be used to create
fraudulent but authentic-looking prescriptions. Similarly, other types of
secure and/or pre-printed paper stock can be used to create fraudulent
transcripts, credit applications, invoices, legal documents, and other highly
sensitive documents.
To help
combat this problem, Relyco has introduced a line of Standard Laser Printers
with locks.
These
printers use standard toner, which costs significantly less than MICR toner, but
incorporate various security features – including locking drawers - to help
prevent unauthorized use of the forms being printed. In addition to the secure,
locking paper trays, security features may include audit capabilities, password
protection, and disable jam recovery features, depending upon the printer model.
Another
important aspect of Relyco’s Standard Laser Printers with locks is that the
paper trays are truly secure. That is, competing companies often install locks
on the front of a printer’s paper tray with no consideration given to other
points of access. Many printer models, for example, allow access to the paper
tray from the rear of the machine, while other models sit atop the paper tray
without actually being fastened to it. This of course means that the printer
can literally be lifted off of the tray, exposing the paper to theft even if the
tray itself is equipped with a lock.
Relyco laser
printers with locks are designed for true document security. In addition to the
keyed locks on the face of the print drawer(s), the printer is securely fastened
to the drawer to prevent lifting, and the rear of each secure unit is fitted
with steel plating to prevent rear access.
