List of Common Applications
Remote
Deposit Capture
|
 |
Corporate Capture (Remote
Deposit)
– This is when a commercial customer
scans the checks that they receive and
digitally transmit the scanned images
for presentment to their bank rather
than making a physical trip to deposit
the checks. This is by far the most
common application for scanning checks,
and is rapidly gaining popularity in
companies of all sizes, as it eliminates
the need to have employees leave the
office to make deposits at the bank. It
is also advantageous to the bank itself,
as they are offered earlier access to
funds and are no longer limited
geographically to corporate customers in
their immediate area. |

Branch & Teller Capture
 |
Teller Capture:
Captures check images at
individual teller stations in
conjunction with teller software
application. |
 |
Branch Capture:
Captures the entire teller
line’s check images using a
single, centralized device
rather than having a scanner at
each individual teller station
or window. Due to multiple
users, this generally requires a
faster batch scanner than the
teller window environment. |

Back Office Conversion
– This is a new NACHA Rule that took
effect in March of 2007, which allows
merchants to collect checks, scan them,
and then convert the scanned data to an
ACH transaction (as opposed to check
presentment). This has been established
in the marketplace as a preferred method
over Point of presentment (POP), where
retail customers’ checks are scanned and
immediately returned to them by the
cashier. |

 |
Microfilm Replacement
– Many banks and financial institutions
that use Microfilm to store check images
are switching to scanning, if they
haven’t done so already. Scanned images
are faster and easier to access than
microfilm, they cost less, and they take
up less physical space. |
|
|
|
|
|
 |
Remittance Processing
– This is the process of matching checks
with their corresponding invoices, with
the end result being to prepare checks
for deposit at the bank |
