Joni van Gelder is one of our Senior Account Executives. She has worked at Relyco for over 15 years. One of the first things you’ll notice about Joni is how witty she is. And she’s quick about it! Joni is always ready to serve a sly comeback or slick line to get people laughing. She has all of the traits of an excellent storyteller: a commanding presence, a flair for the dramatics and she can seamlessly weave together several different threads to tell a compelling (and usually funny) story.
We call Joni the “webinar queen” because she hosts many of our webinars. The average person might not know it, but it is surprisingly difficult to host webinars. You’ve got to be a solid public speaker and have the ability to adjust on the spot when technical difficulties arise. Problems don’t happen too often, but it’s inevitable when you host enough webinars; lost connections, frozen screens, power outages, slide deck mishaps…you name it, it has happened to Joni over the years. But she is unflappable. She just rolls with it in the moment and moves right along.
Joni serves on Relyco’s Community Service Team and she organizes the annual holiday gift project, through which Relyco gives gifts to local children whose families need some help during the holidays. Joni got the project going in 2003 for 14 kids and it has since grown into a program for 100+ kids yearly. Over the last fifteen years, Relyco has donated gifts for 500+ children. From compiling the numbers to calling the 50+ families to see what their kids would like for the holidays, Joni plays a huge role in the project each year.
Interviewing her for this piece was a fun time because she gave some pretty unique answers. Nobody else suggested grabbing a fire extinguisher for the tenth question, that’s for sure! Check it out:
What three words would your friends use to describe you?
Determined, courageous, funny.
How long is your commute to work?
About 35 minutes. When working from home, it’s about 40′ to my den.
Where did you grow up?
Do you drink coffee or tea in the morning?
Coffee. I hate tea.
What’s your favorite smell?
Oh, it’s hard to describe. Spring. The smell of everything new.
What do you wish your customers knew?
I hope they know that we genuinely want to help them. Sometimes we have to ask so many questions because of the intricacy of what they’re trying to do. That can put some customers off. But we’re asking these questions because we really want to get it right.

Don’t change a thing.
Your house is on fire, what’s the one thing you grab?
The fire extinguisher.

Where is/was your favorite place to visit while traveling?
I spent two nights camping in Simpson Desert in Australia. I got to lay under the stars and look at the Southern Cross. It took my breath away. We were there for six weeks. We rented a camper and drove all around the continent. It was amazing. Great Barrier Reef cruises, Ayers Rock, yeah, it was glorious.
