Waterproof Restaurant Posters: A Recipe for Long-Lasting Success

As a restaurant owner or manager, one of your biggest priorities should be your staff. They are your biggest asset. Ensuring safety in the back of the house with posters and signage not only improves working conditions, it can also create a more efficient kitchen.

It’s commonly understood that restaurant owners and management staff are very busy. From the day-to-day details to larger concerns about staying relevant and responding to changing demographics, they have their plates full. (Pun intended!) It can be a volatile and stressful industry; there are a lot of aspects that go into opening and maintaining a successful restaurant. But as an owner or manager, one of your biggest priorities should be your staff. They are your biggest asset. You can have a great menu, but without the staff to run your restaurant, it won’t matter.

The importance of staff safety

Your staff’s well-being and safety should be critically important to you. Of course, it’s also the law for employers to provide a safe workplace. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) lists “color codes, posters, labels or signs to warn employees of potential hazards” as a key employer responsibility. Ensuring safety in the back of the house not only improves working conditions, it can also create a more efficient kitchen.

Reduce risk with restaurant posters

Safety notices aren’t just about keeping your staff safe, they can also be used to protect your patrons – and, by default, your restaurant’s reputation. To reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses, educate your staff about improper food storage and healthy habits. According to Learn2Serve, risk-reduction signage that is “easy to understand, informative, attention-grabbing and memorable” will reinforce training sessions. It may sound basic, but it works! ServSafe offers some downloadable restaurant posters on the resources page of their website, which you can print off. Alternately, you can create your own posters with catchy lines and funny images to mix things up!

Here are a few more signage ideas:

  • Food safety posters
  • Handwashing station reminders
  • Opening/closing procedures
  • Instructions on how to safely operate an appliance

Find a suitable material for the kitchen

Restaurant posters or signs on standard paper aren’t going to hold up long in a busy kitchen. That environment can be pretty extreme for basic signage. We’re talking temperature fluctuations, moisture, grease and splashes galore! Using a waterproof, tear-proof paper eliminates the need to laminate standard paper, which reduces cost, time and annoyance.

REVLAR waterproof paper is a great option for restaurant kitchens. It is safe to use in direct or indirect contact with food and you can use your own dry toner laser printer! You can also find it in eye-catching vibrant colors. Try out waterproof paper for yourself! Click here or on the button below to request free samples.

Atlantic Grill Loves the Look, Feel and Ease of Waterproof Menus

Watch the video to learn why Atlantic Grill uses waterproof menus! Atlantic Grill is open year-round, but because they are located in a seasonal community, they receive an influx of customers during the summer months. As the number of patrons increases, the need for durable menus becomes even more critical.

Atlantic Grill is situated in the coastal community of Rye, New Hampshire. They’ve been in business for three years and they specialize in fresh seafood and traditional fare with a creative twist. The restaurant is located just minutes from Rye’s beautiful sandy beaches.

They are open year-round, but because they are located in a seasonal community, they receive an influx of customers during the summer months. Their hours expand and they begin to offer both lunch and dinner 7 days per week. As the number of patrons increases, the need for durable menus becomes even more critical.

For Atlantic Grill, their interest in waterproof menus originated for both aesthetic and practical reasons. Becky Donovan, Atlantic Grill’s General Manager, explains:

“We didn’t like the look of paper menus in plastic sleeves. That’s what we had when we first opened. We wanted something that was just a little more different. We needed something durable, that didn’t need additional protection. We wanted something that could handle a lot of use, especially in the summer when we have a high volume of customers.”

Learn more about how Atlantic Grill uses waterproof menus by watching the video above. Click on the play button or click here.

Why are REVLAR waterproof menus such a good fit for Atlantic Grill?

  • They are much happier with the look and feel of REVLAR vs. the plastic protectors they previously used
  • Their management prefers to purchase products from NH companies
  • It fulfills their operational needs for cleanable, printable and durable menus for a high volume of customers

Please Restaurant Customers by Keeping Menus Clean

Restaurant owners: dirty menus are one of your customers’ biggest pet peeves. A menu that is sticky, stained or has food remnants on it can be, at best, off-putting and, at worst, disgusting. You can easily lose customers over it. This can be avoided by simply keeping menus clean.

keeping menus clean

Restaurant owners: dirty menus are one of your customers’ biggest pet peeves. A basic Quora inquiry reveals complaint after complaint about dirty menus. A menu that is sticky, stained or has food remnants on it can be, at best, off-putting and, at worst, disgusting. You can easily lose customers over it. Even worse than losing customers? Customers posting about their negative experiences on a review site, like TripAdvisor or Yelp. Check out the images below – those are actual reviews on TripAdvisor. One customer’s bad impression then impacts countless potential customers. Their likelihood to want to visit your restaurant decreases. All of this can be avoided by simply keeping menus clean.

Unsanitary Menus

Beyond the obvious ick factor of old food sticking to menus, there are other elements to consider. Even menus that look clean to the naked eye can harbor a multitude of germs. Think about it: everyone touches them. If you aren’t cleaning your menus with an antibacterial cleaning agent, your menu is bound to be unsanitary. Indeed, there was a 2013 report published by a team of researchers that suggests menus can serve as vehicles for pathogens such as salmonella and E. coli.

Your Choices for Keeping Menus Clean

If you aren’t regularly cleaning your menus, you are doing your restaurant – and your customers – a real disservice. Dirty menus are an often overlooked, but easy-to-solve problem. To ensure that you always have fresh, clean menus to present, you have two choices: constantly re-print paper menus or print once on a material that can be washed and sanitized. If you decide to avoid paper menus because of the cost associated with daily printing, then you probably don’t want to laminate either. Lamination can look cheap. It is also a time-consuming and expensive hassle that isn’t all that effective in the long run.

Waterproof Menus

For a permanent solution, consider synthetic waterproof paper. It is super durable and will outlast all other menu materials. It is tear-proof and easily endures heavy handling. You can even print your own menus if you’d like to. The waterproof material can be washed and wiped down to sanitize it.

The synthetic material will not break down even after multiple cleanings. But it is important to point out that if you use a harsh chemical cleaner, the toner might start to flake off. This can also happen if menus are stacked while wet. Toner failure can be easily avoided by visiting your local print shop and UV coating your menus.

Waterproof menu options are available in a variety of sizes, thicknesses and colors on our REVLAR waterproof material. Click here or on the button below to learn more about waterproof menus with our free guide!

Paper or Plastic Menus: Do Your Menus Pass the Tear Test?

Menus receive heavy and frequent handling and they are exposed to food and drinks often. In order for them to last, you need to invest in a good quality material that can withstand these elements. Plastic menus are not only waterproof, they’re also tear-proof.

Paper or plastic? That’s the age old question, right? But we’re not talking about bags here, we’re discussing menus! Menus receive heavy and frequent handling and they are exposed to food and drinks often. In order for them to last, you need to invest in a good quality material that can withstand these elements. Plastic menus are the perfect solution! The synthetic material is not only waterproof, it’s also tear-proof.

Paper Menus = Easy Tearing

Unfortunately, if your menus are made from paper, they are not going to pass a tear test. Regular paper – even a heavy stock – is not going to hold up to abuse. Paper rips…that’s all there is to it!

We conducted tear tests at five different restaurants for the video above. Check it out by pressing the play button or clicking here! Every paper menu failed; we were able to rip them easily. Sure, we know that most of your customers aren’t deliberately tearing your menus like we did for our video. We did it to make the point that paper menus are a bad idea because they are flimsy. Even if you put them in a menu cover or booklet, the paper will still wear out and develop tears over time.

Plastic Menus = Tear-proof and Waterproof

Waterproof menus are made from synthetic paper. The plastic doesn’t tear, even when you really try! And we definitely tried: see how hard we were on the plastic menu at the :20 mark?! That thing would not rip!

The plastic waterproof material also means that these menus can tolerate spills and grease. You can wash the plastic with water or wipe it with a mild cleansing agent. This is also a great feature because it allows you to disinfect your menus. The ability to clean the material eliminates the need to reprint. Unlike paper menus, if your plastic menus get soiled, it doesn’t mean you need new ones, which saves you time, money and hassle!

Speaking of printing, don’t assume that the plastic material means that you can’t print your own. On the contrary, it’s super easy to print these menus with your dry toner laser printer. You can still make changes and updates to your menu whenever you want to!

Plastic menu options are available in a variety of sizes, thicknesses and colors on our REVLAR waterproof material. Click here or on the button below to learn more about waterproof menus with our free guide!

8 Great Bar Menu Design Ideas Using Waterproof Paper

We’ve got great news: making the transition to a waterproof material doesn’t mean that you need to compromise on design. If you’re feeling stuck on design or just want to see some examples, we’ve got you covered. Here are eight bar menu design ideas to inspire you!

When designing menus, bars, pubs, and cocktail lounges all have to consider the spills that will inevitably happen. If you decide to print your menus on standard paper, those menus will need to be tossed if they get wet, sticky or soiled. It’s a waste of time, money and resources. But if menus are initially printed on waterproof paper, they can simply be wiped down with a wet cloth and reused after a spill.

Your Design Will Still Shine

There’s no need to fear that making the transition to a waterproof material will mean that you need to compromise on design. That presumption couldn’t be further from the truth. You can still design your menus however you want! Drink menus can be really fun. They’re often smaller than a full-sized restaurant menu – at just one page or less – which means that their design and layout can be all the more unique. If you’re feeling stuck on design or just want to see some examples, we’ve got you covered. Here are eight bar menu design ideas to inspire you!

Menus for Restaurants With Bars

bar menu design ideasThe bright yellow waterproof menu is for a restaurant near a beach that has an outdoor deck/patio bar open in the summer. The colors and design definitely fit that atmosphere, right?

The Blue Latitudes menu’s design is simple and crisp. These white menus stand out nicely against the copper covered high table tops and bar.

Hazel House has a quiet cocktail lounge attached to their fine dining area. The neutral, muted colors reflect the up-scale nature of the establishment, while the pops of color make their drink images come alive.

Menus for Late Night Bars

bar menu design ideasWineries and breweries sometimes open up later at night for tastings and flights. The Wine Bar menu is designed to be elegant and eye-catching. It sits atop a wine barrel next to where tastings are poured. On the other hand, the brewery designed a smaller menu because they wanted to be able to tuck it between the glasses on each flight paddle.

The Night Cap Bar menu is an example of a pre-scored menu. It looks classic, without looking pretentious. It matches the exclusive, yet welcoming feel that you get when you walk into your neighborhood cocktail lounge.

Menus for Urban Daytime Spots

bar menu design ideasThe juice bar menu illustrates their fresh, healthy drinks through their use of color on their menu. While a hipster coffee bar utilizes a black waterproof paper to create a chalkboard vibe. Menus are attached to wooden slabs with elastic bands for utility and to convey that we-just-threw-this-together look.

All of these waterproof menus can be printed on a dry toner laser printer. It’s just as easy to print on waterproof paper as it is to print on standard paper. There’s no reason that you can’t design a really special menu on waterproof paper.

We hope these bar menu design ideas have sparked some ideas for you! Remember, the key is to utilize colors and design to create menus that are unique and reflective of your space.

Menu Paper at Blue Latitudes Can Handle a Spill (Or Several)

Our latest customer story comes from Blue Latitudes, a restaurant located in Dover, New Hampshire. Owner Jeff Roemer sat down to chat about menu paper and the benefits of going waterproof.

menu paper

Our latest customer story comes from Blue Latitudes, a restaurant located in Dover, New Hampshire. After generously allowing us to film a video in his restaurant, owner Jeff Roemer sat down to chat about menu paper and the benefits of going waterproof.

Neighbors Become Friends

Blue Latitudes is located in a restored mill building where Relyco headquarters used to be. Twelve years ago, Relyco was located on the floor directly above where the restaurant was moving in and getting started. According to Jeff, Relyco owner Mike Steinberg was not shy about meeting his new neighbors. He stopped in to say hello, as did other Relyco employees. As time went on, Mike and Jeff became good friends. Eight years ago, their friendship further evolved when they co-created an annual Thanksgiving Celebration for people in the community who might not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy a traditional meal. As the friendship between Jeff and Mike grew, so has the relationship between Relyco and Blue Latitudes. It makes perfect sense that when Jeff wanted to move away from traditional paper for his drink menus, he turned to Relyco.

The Benefits of Waterproof Menu Paper

In the past, when Blue Latitudes used standard paper for their drink menus, they ran into problems. Now, they use 8.5″ x 11″ sheets of our 7.7 mil REVLAR waterproof paper, which they print and then cut to 4.25″ x 11″ menus. Jeff explains:

“We always used paper and I would print it here. Invariably splashes of drinks and food get on the menus. Obviously they have to be changed out every time. So there’s a printing cost and our staff was in a panic coming in to see me to get new stuff printed because of the damage. But with this [REVLAR], it’s a durable product. So it’s much easier to maintain. It’s a lot less overhead.”

For Blue Latitudes, the advantages to using waterproof menu paper go beyond the cost savings. Jeff also likes that it’s cleanable, wipeable, of a heavier stock than normal paper and it doesn’t tear. They are able to get much more life out of the menus.

Ability To Print In-House

Jeff also appreciates that he can continue to print his menus in-house. He has been particularly impressed with how the menus print.

“It [REVLAR] takes the color great. It’s easy to work with. You know I don’t have the highest end laser printer here, and it goes through there without any problem.”

Blue Latitudes prints menus once or twice a month, depending on the season and how often they’re rolling out new specials. They don’t have big printing needs, so being able to do it on site helps keep costs down and provides flexibility.

We’re glad to be able to provide these kinds of solutions and benefits to all of our customers, but it is especially sweet when we can do so for our friends.

Drop Your Bacon! We Have 5 Unique Breakfast Menu Design Ideas

You want customers to have a great experience at your restaurant. Everything down to the color and quality of your menus will make an impression. A bright, colorful menu can set you apart from your competition! Don’t know where to start? We came up with five breakfast menu design ideas to share.

breakfast menu design ideas

You want customers to have a great experience at your restaurant. Everything down to the color and quality of your menus will make an impression. A bright, colorful menu can set you apart from your competition! Delight your customers with a creative design and color scheme, while saving yourself time, money and hassle. It’s a win-win!

The first step: coming up with an idea. Don’t know where to start? Let’s jump-start those creative juices! We came up with five breakfast menu design ideas to share.

Your Design Should Be Unique – Like You

Design your menus to reflect your restaurant. Check out our examples below. Is it a country-style place with utensils and cooking tools adorning the walls? Our black menu is designed to fit a place like that – with its chalkboard feel and illustrations. Do you have a bright and cheery atmosphere? Our pastel yellow menu is suited for that kind of restaurant – the color combination and fonts make it look friendly. With its bold greeting, the blue menu cover is perfect for a funky, eclectic place.

Color Is Key

With these five, we wanted to show a variety of breakfast menu design ideas, while also demonstrating that it’s the color that really makes them stand out. We chose colors that we thought best complimented the design and message of each menu. For example, desert sand colored paper makes the most sense for a coffee house menu, while a nice vibrant blue and white ink really pops if you’ve got a bold greeting. On the other hand, sometimes a white menu is the best option; the simplicity of our white menu’s design encouraged us to opt for a white paper. When we tried printing it on a colored paper, it just didn’t look right.

We’d recommend that you take the same approach. You definitely don’t want to choose a color that really doesn’t “go” with the design of your menu. But if you choose the right color, it can really stand out.

High Quality Without A High Cost

Menu Video

Once you determine your design and color, you’ll need to choose a material. Waterproof menus will last and last – through bacon grease, syrup, coffee rings and rough handling! Quick turnaround for breakfast doesn’t have to mean quick turnaround for menus. You won’t have to keep reprinting your breakfast menus if you print them on waterproof paper the first time. Check out our video to see how well waterproof menus hold up in a (very sticky!) breakfast setting.

How to Print Waterproof Menus on a Laser Printer

It’s easy to print waterproof menus by using a laser printer. But how easy is easy? Check out our video, we’ll show you.

A Step by Step Guide

It’s easy to print your own menus on waterproof paper by using a laser printer, offset printer or flexo printer. The key is checking your printer’s settings and adjusting them to run a synthetic paper. Once you’ve done that, you’re good to go!

How easy is easy? Click play on our video above or watch it by clicking here. It’s 15 seconds long, which is a pretty good indicator that…you guessed it, it’s easy! Print waterproof menus on your own printer:

  1. Load the paper in any tray. We recommend fanning out the sheets just prior to placing them in the tray to reduce static electricity.
  2. Adjust your printer’s settings to use a synthetic paper setting, if possible. (More tips here and here).
  3. Hit the print button. You can even print double-sided and instruct your printer to do a fold, like we did!
  4. Grab them! You’re done.

Benefits of Printing In House

By printing your own waterproof menus, you can enjoy the perks of printing as many – or as few – menus as you need. This is especially great if you have a temporary menu that changes often and you only want to print a limited amount. Plus, this way, even your temporary menus can be durable! Of course, you can print larger runs of your standard menu too.

We have a variety of sizes, thicknesses and colors available for waterproof menus on our REVLAR waterproof paper. You can also opt for a pre-scored menu, if that suits you better. Click here or on the button below to learn more about waterproof menus with our free guide!

The Top 3 Reasons Every Restaurant Should Serve a Waterproof Menu

Restaurant menus receive some really rough treatment; the spills and frequent handling can take a toll on paper menus, even if they are laminated. A durable, waterproof menu makes all the difference.

Waterproof Menu Samples

We’ve all been there. Before ordering at a restaurant, somebody passes the bread and knocks over a wine glass. It spills all over the menu, making a soggy mess. Or you absentmindedly place the syrup dispenser down on the specials menu and it leaves a sticky ring. Maybe the kids have lost their patience after the meal. They’re running around and accidentally jostle the table – mom’s coffee lands on the dessert menu. It happens. Restaurant menus receive some really rough treatment; the spills and frequent handling can take a toll on paper menus, even if they are laminated. A durable, waterproof menu makes all the difference.

1. A Waterproof Menu Holds Up Better

Waterproof paper is a synthetic material that withstands abuse without any breakdown; you can count on it to last in the long term. The material is tear-proof and extremely durable. Waterproof menus will hold up to all kinds of spills and chemicals. If the menus get dirtied, just wipe or wash them clean. It’s as easy as that! You can even fully submerge the menu in liquid and it will be just fine, which is perfect for restaurants with outdoor seating. A passing rain shower (or intense downpour) won’t automatically mean that you need to reprint your menus!

2. Save Time & Money

wine spill need waterproof menuIf you work in a restaurant environment, you’re already busy enough. You don’t need to be spending precious time and money replacing paper menus every time someone tips over a wine glass. Plus, with a waterproof menu, you don’t need to deal with the hassle of lamination. Lamination is time-consuming, more expensive than waterproof paper and it can peel, bubble or crease, which allows moisture to penetrate and damage the finished piece. Laminated pieces also have a shorter lifespan. So why not begin with menus that are already waterproof and eliminate lamination – and its drawbacks – altogether?

3. Print In House & On Demand

The final reason to use a waterproof menu: you can print your own! With your dry toner laser printer, you can print as many (or as few) menus as you need. This is ideal if you have a temporary menu that changes often and you only want to print a limited amount, like for holiday specials or drink/draft menus. That menu will only be used for a matter of days or weeks, so it’s important to be able to print your own as needed.

Of course, you can also print larger runs of your standard menu on your own printer. But if you’d prefer to send that job out to your local print shop, you might consider UV coating to give your waterproof menus additional protection. The synthetic material will hold up and maintain its integrity over time, but the toner on your menus may begin to flake off if you use harsh chemical cleaners or stack the menus when they are wet. UV coating seals in the toner so that the entire piece is protected. But remember, it’s optional; you can still enjoy the benefits of waterproof menus with or without a UV coat.

Waterproof menu options are available in a variety of sizes, thicknesses and colors on our REVLAR waterproof paper. You can even opt for a pre-scored menu, if that fits your needs better. Click here or on the button below to learn more about waterproof menus with our free guide!
